Every now and then I see really cool things cross my path. This is one of them. It’s a series of images related to play spaces for kids. I’ve been thinking about it through a lens of experience design. What is the unique experience of each place? What does the design show the user about how the space can be used? How might a user be able to bring their own sense of self to become a part of the experience? Have the designers left room in their designs for this?

Lots to think about.

OR you could just skip the thinking part and just play… and be.

Have you ever closed yourself in a bathroom with a bunch of bouncy balls and then thrown them down as hard as you can so you can watch them bounce all over the place and fly off of walls and fixtures in fifty different directions and you love it but you also have to cover your head because you might be in a small amount of danger? That’s what my head feels like right now. And my thoughts and ideas are the bouncy balls.

You know what’s really cool? When the balls glow in the dark and you turn off all the lights in this process.

I’m watching them all settle from big bounces to smaller bounces to tiny little bump bump bumps into stillness. Then I collect them and throw them all again.

(Am I the only one who did this as a kid?)

And for more inspiration, watch this. It never gets old:
That’s freaking cool, man. I can’t belive I’m going to be published. First title of many, me hopes. Wow.

Just thought I’d share.

http://ds.ign.com/objects/074/074606.html#

And another update from later today: They’re targeting the release for August 17th. I’ll keep y’all posted. I want to run around in circles and do little happy dances. This is some cool shiz. An DOE funded R&D project/educational game that was aligned to content standards and had to undergo an efficacy study is going to be on shelves.

And today posted a fantastic set of fortune cookies for Preschool TV. It made me giggle. And maybe get just a little excited. I might be pleased if working for Sesame Workshop was in my future! (But staying there? Is that a good thing? Perhaps I should have this conversation with a few people more in the know that I.) So perhaps it’s time for Punxsutawney Phil to move over… is Josh the new prognosticator of prognosticators? Except I’m watching videos at http://www.nickjr.com/kids-videos/.

Tonight’s featured entertainment with Aunty Meagan is Team Umizoomi. They have math powers. I appreciate the art – the fun feel created by mixing “real” images and animation. (Why did I put real in quotes? Because I’ve been drinking PhD Kool-Aid, and I realize that to call animated, virtual, or any other media NOT real is to engage in a very long and painful philosophical conversation, and I didn’t think you’d appreciate me distinguishing between meet-space images and cartoons. Ugh. Grad school will be the death of me.)

The premise is kinda cheesy… and I’m not sure how I feel about the fact that the girl’s special math power is patterns and she uses it for her clothes….which are usually pink. How NOT fair that she has that power, but the boy gets to build stuff. Lu-cky. BUT I like that the math is attainable, and it uses the same prompts and viewer interaction strategies that tried and true shows like Dora and Diego use. I found myself yelling “BELLY SCREEN” at my computer pretty promptly. (And it’s not creepy belly screens, like those icky Teletubbies.) The name of the show also made me happy, since umi is the Hawaiian word for ten, which follows quite nicely with the math theme.

My conclusion: I give Team Umizoomi 7.5 out of 10 stars.

I thought you’d like to know.

So this week I had a bit of an epiphany. But not. Because it’s not like I never knew this before. It’s just that I’ve gotten sidetracked a bit.

I love kids. All of them. Kurt and I finally narrowed my preferred group down to the age range of 0-16. And I feel bad for the 17s, but I just HAVE to draw a line somewhere…. Once they’re 18, they can just go on, get out, get a job, make a life. I don’t care as deeply. They’re just not as interesting. But until then, they’re just neat neat learning growing developing realizing people. And I love it. Being with them makes me feel like I have life.

I officially moved here to Madison six months and three weeks and two days ago. (But who’s counting?) This is the firstPA170118 time in my life that I’m not surrounded by kids and/or kid like thinking. I started babysitting at 10 years old. Since then, youth related activities have always been a part of my life. Teaching, leading summer prograams, youth groups, camps, volunteer clubs and organizations, developing kid-focused curricula, even countless numbers of friends with kids. When I came here, most of that came to a screeching halt. I seem to have replaced the chunks of my life that were kid focused with school and other “works”.

Last week I had the honor of being able to speak to the kids at the Tech Academy at New Berlin. Fifty students between seventh and eleventh grade sat at reasonably good attention for whole hour. The first half hour was me talking to them about instructional design and educational video games and the things I’ve learned along the way that don’t come from text books. Then for a half hour they grilled me. I mean GRILLED. “What’s the first video game you ever played?” “Would you ever want to run your own company?” “What do you think you are going to do after you’re done with school?” “What do you do when people come to a design meeting and want totally different things?” “Who’s more fun, teachers or game designers?” “So did you actually play pong?” “If you say that games that are designed good can be good for learning, do you still hate shooting games?” and “If you could make any video game you wanted, what would you make?” Not even Kurt grills me like that, and he’s my advisor. But it was awesome. I loved seeing the way new knowledge had gotten into their brain cells and made them question things in new ways. I loved being “tested”. I loved being able to share a few of the things I’ve learned along the way (like living out the saying “I’m rubber, you’re glue; bounces off me and sticks to you.”). Hopefully some things stuck. Maybe most things didn’t. But it’s not about what I actually said. It’s about what can start happening inside their own heads as a result. And that will be different for every student. And I’m so humbled to get to play a part in that.

Lordie, I was just plain INVIGORATED after those two hours.

Last night was a Walt night. My kid “fixes” here seem to take place mostly in quality babysitting time with a super cool 2 year old. I’ve only really known him for the last six months, but I’ve had so much fun watching his development in that short time. And he cracks me up. Like for reals, cracks me UP. I wish I could see inside his head. What does he think about when he’s trying to perfect his nerf pitch? Hands up close by the ears…. take a few steps… lift up a foot, how about this one, maybe like this AND THROW IT AT THE WALL! Outcome? Not as expected, do it again with modifications…..repeat the cycle a few times… aw hell I’m gonna just beat everything around me with my padded PA170084Mallards baseball bat and scream victoriously! Honestly, what on earth was there for me to do other than crack up? Well, that and screaming in victory with him, my own hands in the air…. it was a great night.

So my realization is that I’ve just GOT to get a grip, I’ve got to hone in and get focused. I would hate for my schooling to become the vehicle that sidetracks me and distracts me from the things I love and am passionate about. And as I’m reminded this week, it’s all about kids. They’re amazing, they’re fascinating, and they deserve good stuff. What this means for me, I don’t know. But I’m convinced that this is a step in the right direction.

Thorndike in 1912 (Quoted in Saettler, 1968:52)

Okay, that’s nuts if you ask me. Thorndike is basically calling out computer based instruction, whether in a game or other interactive learning tool. 1912? Seems to me that if the educational thinkers of yesteryear were dreaming of the sorts of pedagogical tools that we today have access to, then in would behoove us to make better use of such educational innovations. Come on. It’ll make the spirit of Thorndike happy.

March 23rd was exciting for me. Speaking for the first time at GDC, I have accomplished something that’s no small peanuts. They even had the clippy kind of mike that you put on your jacket! Not that I’m big peanuts. There are nuts much greater than I. (This is going in the WRONG direction. Mental regroup.)

So the serious games crowd was mostly… well… serious. There wasn’t a whole lot of chuckling, even though I thought our presentation had some humorous elements. Thank goodness Javier had a friend from Western Illinois who was smiling and nodding through the whole thing – giving great non-verbal feedback that really kept me going. Kurt came in a bit late, but as he listened he smiled and nodded, too… also very helpful. (Do participants even realize how important that is?) The conference assistant was supposed to give us a ten and five minute cue to make sure that we didn’t go over, and I was really keeping an eye on her. I didn’t want to overstay my welcome on that stage. All of a sudden, Ian Bogost came and told Javier that we had two minutes and to wrap up and take a question so the next guy could come up. I was a bit surprised but tried to wrap up gracefully. When I finally got to the back of the room, the conference assistant came up to me apologizing. When I asked what happened, she told me that we had been cut off ten minutes early, and she didn’t know why. I still don’t know why… but I was told by a wise person not to take it personally. So I’m not gonna. No one is raining on my little peanut parade.

The feedback was very positive. We’ve talked to a number of participants who have also been doing exciting projects, and I’d like to think that our experiences can help people shape some of their own decisions and lead to new successes for their own project experiences.

The Fez Guy and the World of Goo Guy were great. Funny. Gotta find that ppt. It makes me want to slightly divorce the SGS and move on over to the independent games peeps. They’re fun. They have strong feelings about things like not being jerks. And that’s a philosophy I can buy into.
